#4 - Up Discussion

“A good movie can take you out of your dull funk and the hopelessness that so often goes with slipping into a theater; a good movie can make you feel alive again, in contact, not just lost in another city."

Week 4 (18th Oct 2013)
We gathered up for the fourth meeting.

We were having the discussion on Up.

Our discussion was based on the guide questions provided,

Besides,we jotted down some important scenes or details that may help us to answer the guide question later.

We take photo and video as a proof of our meeting discussion.

During Movie

1. Who are the 5 most important characters in he film? List out the names of the actors playing them?

Carl Fredricksen voiced by Edward Asner
Russell voiced by Jordan Nagai
Charles Muntz voiced by Christopher Plummer
Dug voiced by Bob Peterson
Ellie voiced by Elie Docter

2. What is the story about?

The story is about an old man, Carl Fredricksen on his journey to fulfill his late wife's wish to live at Paradise Falls in South America. One night, he attached hundreds or thousands of helium balloons to his house. The next morning, his house was uprooted along with him inside, and off they flew to begin their journey to Paradise Falls.

He was unexpectedly accompanied by a wilderness explorer named Russell who happened to be on his front porch. They landed at South America and proceeded on foot to Paradise Falls. Russell became friends with a 13 foot tropical bird he later named Kevin.

Little did they know, Charles Muntz a renown adventurer, was hunting for the bird to redeem his name as a great adventurer. Carl and Russell went through a lot of ups and downs during their adventure. An adventure filled with intense getaways from ferocious talking dogs and numerous emotional roller coasters.

3. What group of people would like to watch his film?

In my opinion, people of all ages would enjoy this film. This film has humour that will make the younger kids laugh and have a great time. The older kids and teenagers would enjoy the adventures faced by Carl and Russell and have a sense of longing for these adventures too. The young adults and the older generation would appreciate the love shared between Carl and Ellie, that would make even a grown man tear up.

After Movie

1. Do you like this movie? Why or why not?

I liked this movie very much. The bond that grew between Carl and Russell as they went on their adventure was very heart-warming. Carl, who has wanted a son and Russell, whose father was hardly ever around connected with incredible chemistry. Also, Carl and Ellie's love for each other was inspiring and it reminds us that life is an adventure no matter what you do.

2. What rating would you give for this movie?

A whopping ten out of ten.

3. What spoilers would ruin this movie if you told your readers about it?

In Ellie's 'Book of Adventures', she told Carl that she saved a lot of pages to fill in, when they would have their adventures at Paradise Falls. Carl has always been upset that Ellie didn't get a chance to fill those pages in. Little did he know, Ellie has been filling those pages with memories of herself and Carl's life together as a married couple. At the end of the book, Ellie wrote “Thanks for the adventure, now go have one of your own. -Ellie-”. Ellie did not need an adventure like living at Paradise Falls, because their life together was already an adventure.
It was then, that Carl realized that what was important at the moment was saving Russell and Kevin from the wrath of Charles Muntz.

4. All movies teach a lesson (theme or moral). What did you learn from this movie?

I learnt that life is an adventure no matter what you do. You should not solely focus on where you want to go and disregard everything else that occurs along the way. Because what matters the most is the present, not the past or the future. Carl was very determined to get his house to Paradise Falls that he forgot that doing the right thing, which was to help Russell rescue Kevin, was what was important.

5. What title would you give for your review?

An UPlifting tale.
